News that demand for UK warehousing and fulfilment space is dwindling doesn’t appear to have reached Amazon.

The digital retail giant is to open a new 464,000 sq ft centre located in Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham, in October when the first 1,000 of 2,000 eventual staff will begin processing and fulfilling customer orders.
The company said it has begun recruiting IT professionals, health & safety managers, finance specialists and teams to pack and ship orders in the new warehouse.
It becomes Amazon's fourth fulfilment centre in the North East of England, with the £450 million unit at Wynyard Park set to feature the company’s new generation systems led by specialist robotic technology.
The new jobs created will take Amazon’s total workforce in the North East to 6,000 full and part-time roles, and the company’s investment in the region to more than £1.7 billion since 2010, the BBC reported.
Alex Cunningham, MP for Stockton North, said: “The announcement is very welcome news for our area as it will see high-quality jobs and substantial investment brought to Stockton-on-Tees. I was impressed by the modern state-of-the-art robotics building which I visited earlier this year, and I’m looking forward to seeing the site fully open and operational this autumn, creating 2,000 new permanent local jobs and adding to Amazon’s already significant investment in the North East.”
