John Lewis dives into menswear rental with high street's biggest platformBy

John Lewis has announced a key initiative with a move into menswear rental. It’s a big development both for the retailer and the category and comes in the same month as M&S announced a bigger focus on men's formalwear, helping to make men’s clothing one of the liveliest areas of the market at present.

John Lewis Fashion Rental’s new development is powered by rental specialist Hurr and sees the retailer’s site hosting a range of occasionwear looks from John Lewis exclusive brands as well as third-party premium labels.

In fact, it said the offer is “the biggest range of menswear brands available to rent on the high street” with the inclusion of popular formalwear labels such as Boss Tailoring and Charles Tyrwhitt along with newcomers such as Hay Life, among others.

The platform will host a “carefully curated selection of contemporary brands” with rental prices starting from £40 for a four-day rental for a dinner jacket and trousers with sizes from 34-46. Rental periods will range up to 30 with next-day delivery if needed.

John Lewis said the development “comes after the huge success of our womenswear rental platform launched in 2025”.

The rise of rental has been largely driven by womenswear in recent years. And despite men’s formalwear rental having a decades-long history (think Moss Bros all those years ago), the category hasn’t been seen as a deep dive option for most retailers entering rental, until now.

But John Lewis said that searches for ‘Mens Rental’ have been “consistently in the top 30 search terms on JL.com for the past 18 months, showing demand and appetite for menswear rental options from our customers”.

And according to The Global Online Rental Report, the global menswear rental industry is predicted to be worth $3bn by 2027 “echoing the appetite we’re seeing from our customers”.

John Lewis Commercial Director, Kathleen Mitchell, said the move makes it “unique on the high street to be able to offer the widest range of multiple brands to rent from everyday suits to more premium brands and styles. This is just the beginning of menswear rental and we’re really excited to see it grow.”

As mentioned, it entered rental for womenswear two years ago and said it has “since thrived with a 52% increase in members and a 40% increase of rentals year on year”.

The site has expanded into maternity, skiwear and wedding in the face of customer demand.

Victoria Prew, CEO of Hurr, said: “As a category, menswear is very much undiscovered in rental and this is a unique opportunity for us with incredible potential to shift consumer behaviour towards smarter fashion choices.”
