There’s a standout retail opening for the Gateshead Metrocentre this week with a vastly-expanded Zara store debuting on Thursday (28 September).

The new mega-space replaces the previous Metrocentre Red Mall store, more than doubling in size to 42,000 sq ft. It features an expanded product offer across all departments, including Menswear, Womenswear and Kidswear.
Zara has been on a major store expansion/upgrade programme in the post-pandemic era in both the UK and Ireland, targeting stores in key city centres and malls.
The latest upsize is also part of mall owner/operator Sovereign Centros’ strategy “to bring the biggest and best flagship stores to the Metrocentre, reinforcing its position as the dominant trading location in the North of England”.
Sovereign Centros spokesman Ben Cox said: “Zara’s expansion over two levels completes the re-anchoring of Red Mall alongside the arrival of Flannels, Sports Direct and Everlast Gym into the former Debenhams.
“As well as an extended space and product offering, the development of the Zara store will bring with it more job opportunities for the local community”.
Zara’s new store adds to Metrocentre’s portfolio of occupier ‘giants’ that also includes JD Sports, H&M, Harrods’ H Beauty, River Island and Next.
