Consumers awaiting the highly anticipated arrival of IKEA on London’s Oxford Circus will have to wait yet longer for the opening.

The Swedish home furnishings and homewares giant has been forced to delay the flagship store opening for a second time. This time it’s down to the discovery of leaks in the building’s basement during renovation work.
The retailer said it was now planning to open the store next spring rather than this autumn, roughly 18 months behind schedule.
Ongoing renovations continue to the former Topshop flagship store, which has sat empty since 2025 after the brand's owner Arcadia collapsed into administration.
The London site is now owned by the investment arm of Ingka, the largest franchisee of IKEA.
Peter van der Poel, Ingka Investments’ managing director, said: “We’re now taking vital steps to mitigate long-term flood risk, and to protect and future-proof this historic building for many years to come.”
Peter Jelkeby, Ikea’s UK chief executive, also said: “The historic nature of the building makes its careful renovation more complex, but we want to assure Londoners that we’re just as excited to open the store as they are to visit it.
“We look forward to doing so in spring 2025 and contributing to a positive future for London’s most renowned shopping district.”
The delay will be a setback to Oxford Street’s ongoing redevelopment plans to resurrect its status as London’s top retail and entertainment destination.
The bid to remove the area’s Candy Store blight continues as part of the street’s £90 million regeneration programme that includes construction work to upgrade pavements and install new pedestrian crossings due to start in the autumn. The street continues top attract high-profile retailers too as empty properties continue to be filled or redeveloped.
