If UK retailers don’t have enough just dealing with inflation and the cost-of-living crisis, rail strikes have also had a significant impact on retail footfall across the UK and its shopping destinations, with Central London the hardest hit.

Thursday’s (20 July) nationwide strikes resulted in a 3.5% dip in footfall versus a week ago, according to retail experts MRI Springboard.
Footfall declined in all three key destination types. It was down by 5.9% in high streets, 1.1% in shopping centres and 0.8% in retail parks.
And it dropped “significantly” in Central London by 21.1% indicating that employees opted to work from home, the report said. A similar pattern could be seen in the West Midlands (-11.8%), East Midlands (-9.2%) and regional cities outside of London (-6.9%).
It's a big blow for retailers as they try to attract shoppers to stores in the same numbers as they saw pre-Covid. Footfall has been recovering, but that gap between the pre-pandemic period and today remains.
