While a lot of the attention around Frasers Group’s store openings has been on its luxury Flannels chain, we shouldn't ignore the fact that sports remains a core part of its business and its multiple sports operations are the focus of its latest mega-opening.

The company has taken a huge space at the Gateshead Metrocentre supermall, led by an elevated 50,000 sq ft Sports Direct store “to supercharge the performance of British retail with the world’s best sports and performance brands”. The store offers customers access to other brands from Frasers Group’s ecosystem, including USC, Evans Cycles, and Game.
In addition, it has opened a brand new 37,000 sq ft Everlast Gyms flagship there, “bringing fitness enthusiasts the UK’s largest hybrid gym”.
Looking back at the Sports Direct space, brands available in-store include Nike, Adidas, Puma, Under Armour, New Balance and Asics.
And the “modern and innovative store” has specialist sporting areas for running, football, and outdoor, across men’s, women’s and kidswear.
The running focus brings what Sports Direct said is its “market-leading Running Concept to customers”. The concept first launched in its Manchester flagship and “provides the ultimate tools to help customers find the right product for their running journey”.
Meanwhile, the Everlast Gyms location — its “10th elevated and largest hybrid gym to date — is accessible through Sports Direct (a fact that increases gym-goers exposure to the retailer’s product offer).

The company said its gyms “are the new trailblazers in the fitness industry, delivering a hybrid gym experience, combining the best elements of big box and boutique, and providing members with affordable memberships without compromising the quality of facilities or service”.
Ger Wright, Managing Director Sport at Frasers Group, said: “We are bringing the ultimate fitness destinations to Metrocentre with the opening of Sports Direct and our Everlast Gyms flagship. These openings demonstrate our dedication to expanding and investing into our store portfolio, as we bring the best sports and leisure brands, environments and experiences to key retail destinations across the UK and internationally.

“As the leading destination for sportswear in the UK, and with the support from our major global brand partners, we continue to expand our retail portfolio on our journey to becoming the number one sports retailer in EMEA.”
Frasers Group is one of the most active UK retailers as far as store openings are concerned. And the company clearly sees a lot of potential in Metrocentre in particular, as it also opened a 50,000 sq ft Flannels store there, including both its fashion offer and beauty.
