Researchers at Yale University have found a link between increased levels of ozone in the air and an increased risk of heart attack in young adults. The respective findings were published in the scientific journal GeoHealth.
The research team studied data from 2,322 patients aged 18-55 who had had a heart attack. The researchers looked at levels of air pollution, including ozone and fine particulate matter (PM2.5), near the participants’ homes.
They found that higher levels of ozone were linked to an increased risk of heart attacks four to five days after exposure. However, no link was found between PM2.5 and heart attacks.
The researchers looked at different types of heart attacks separately and found that ozone was most strongly associated with heart problems—such as low blood pressure—that are linked to reduced oxygen delivery.
Also, the researchers found that the link between ozone and heart attacks may be stronger in warmer months. This is particularly concerning given climate change, which is increasing the levels of air pollution and the frequency of extreme temperatures.
The aforesaid research team plans to continue to study the effects of air pollution on health in order to develop more effective prevention and protection measures.
