SGH: alcohol is 电报盗号系统源码more damaging to the liver in diabetes and hypertensionApril 28, 2025  17:49

Having diabetes, hypertension or excess belly fat doubles the risk of developing alcoholic fatty liver disease. This is the conclusion reached by scientists from the University of Southern California. The results of the study were published in the journal Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology (CGH).

About 40 thousand people took part in the study. They told how often and in what quantity they consumed alcoholic beverages. Also, all volunteers provided access to their medical records, and some of them reported having chronic diseases.

The results showed that in people with high blood pressure, diabetes or abdominal obesity, alcohol abuse doubled the risk of developing fatty liver disease. Scientists explained that excess fat accumulation in the liver can lead to inflammation and scarring that limits the organ's function. If untreated, the normal tissue of the organ will continue to be replaced by connective tissue. This pathology is known as cirrhosis.

According to the researchers, belly fat, excess blood sugar and hypertension increase the damaging effects of alcohol by accelerating the accumulation of fat in liver cells. Scientists have calculated that this dangerous effect occurs when two servings of alcohol are consumed daily in women and four servings in men.

In the United States, one serving of alcohol equals 14 grams of ethanol. This amount is contained in two glasses of wine, 250-350 ml of beer or one shot (glass) of spirits.
