As Fenwick revealed its CS Lewis-inspired Newcastle Christmas window this week, its chief executive John Edgar was telling there BBC the retailer’s online and in-store operations had been “performing well” in the face of a changeable year.

The positive message came after Fenwick’s latest results showed a return to profit, helped by a deal to sell its London store on New Bond Street.
Speaking to the BBC’s Today programme, Edgar said: “Our online business is still going. The nine stores we have around the UK are performing well but obviously we’d like them to perform better. The year generally has been up and down, driven by many factors.”
Edgar said the retailer has avoided taking the discounting path where others have. “Our stocks have been in good control and we didn’t do a mid-season sale. We feel that our stores are well set up looking great and ready in the run-up to Christmas”.
And that set-up is a strong one this year, judging by the nine themed windows unveiled at its Newcastle flagship with scenes from The Chronicles of Narnia, particularly The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
A celebration of family, community and the joy of reading, the windows depict the beloved tale of four curious children discovering the magical world of Narnia.
The windows were unveiled in front of children and families from Fenwick’s partner schools, hospitals, and charities, as well as competition winners.
Mia Fenwick, Chief Marketing Officer at Fenwick said: “Our Christmas windows are a celebration of the importance of storytelling… bringing the classic Chronicles of Narnia to Newcastle.”
As part of this year’s window reveal Fenwick are once again partnering with North East charity Seven Stories – The National Centre for Children’s Books. Seven Stories will produce a 45-minute performance for children from seven local schools based on characters from The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. All attending children will receive a free copy of the limited-edition book.
