Administrators of British homeware and household goods retailer Wilko plan to lay off more staff as more shops are closed, in addition to the 1,300 it has already made redundant, PwC said on Wednesday.

PwC said that over 50 stores would be shut across the country next week, adding that discussions with parties interested in buying parts of the business continue.

Discount retailer B&M said on Tuesday it would buy 51 Wilko stores for up to £13 million, a month after the retailer went into administration.

Wilko was taken under the management of administrator PwC in August after a buyer could not be found for the cash-strapped company, putting its 400 stores and 12,500 jobs in danger.

Canadian businessman Doug Putman was reportedly finalising a deal to buy a majority of Wilko — up to 300 stores — from its administrators, but there have been suggestions that is that this has been scaled back to a smaller number.
