Thinking on a grand scale, Gran Canaria's Swim Week has evolved from its local origins in 1996 through the Moda Cálida program into a platform that has increasingly embraced professionalization over the years. The dual objective is clear: to propel local swimwear designers and brands onto the global scene while also attracting international attention to Gran Canaria. A challenge that has recently materialized into dynamic partnerships, both within and beyond its borders, solidifying its position as the premier European event in the swimwear fashion sector. The latest endeavor? A strategic collaboration in Denmark during Copenhagen Fashion Week.

Minerva Alonso, the counselor for economic development, industry, trade, and craftsmanship of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, expressed, "Our presence in Copenhagen marks a significant stride towards the internationalization of Gran Canaria Swim Week, a journey we embarked upon a few years ago." She made this statement during the alliance's unveiling on Monday, August 7.

The event, hosted at the iconic Villa Copenhagen Hotel – nestled just steps away from the renowned Tivoli amusement park in the capital – aimed to celebrate the collaboration between both fashion showcases. This celebration took the form of a show that elegantly merged the elements of a runway presentation with the artistry of dance performance. The showcase featured a curated selection of designs from five talented Gran Canaria designers: Elena Morales, Palmas, Aurelia Gil, Chela Clo, and Carlos San Juan.

Initially planned to grace the hotel's poolside terrace with panoramic views, the spectacle was moved to the hotel's glass-ceilinged and luminous ground floor due to the prevailing strong winds and rain that characterize Copenhagen's much-anticipated summer fashion week. Instead of dampening the spirits of Gran Canaria's representatives, this unforeseen twist added an exotic flair. Such an unexpected occurrence would never have transpired on the island, thus rendering it all the more captivating for international attention.

"Our commitment is to establish Gran Canaria Swim Week as a European beacon for swimwear fashion, leveraging the unique richness of this unparalleled enclave in Europe," reiterated the Cabildo counselor.

She emphasized the pride of collaborating with "an event of European significance, such as Copenhagen Fashion Week." In the previous edition of Gran Canaria's runway, foreign participation (with an increasingly notable representation) saw the inclusion of a sustainable swimwear brand hailing from Denmark.

Looking ahead to the forthcoming event scheduled for October 5 to 7 at the Expomeloneras venue, the incorporation of more Danish representatives resulting from this collaboration is anticipated.

The runway as a catalyst for diverse sectors

Begona Cañete, the representative of the Chamber of Commerce of Gran Canaria, said, "The runway provides substantial support to various sectors on the island and serves as an engine for employment generation."

For the platform, the endeavor involves firmly establishing the event as a sought-after "destination," transitioning from being a "local affair" to an international phenomenon. This strategic vision also bolsters the region's potential in terms of tourism while simultaneously nurturing industries like the audiovisual sector. This multifaceted strategy aligns with the sustainable ethos of "eco-island" projects on Gran Canaria.

Alonso unveiled, "Our proposition is characterized by our small workshops. Rather than seeking to foster a massive textile industry, our aim is to carve out a niche through artisanal products of exceptional quality, deeply tied to our local identity."

She highlighted the distinctive traits of local brands, which also have the capacity to captivate discerning clients with higher purchasing power and a predilection for sustainable products. This is especially true for consumers from Germany and Denmark. Looking ahead to the forthcoming edition of the event, a "strong representation" of professionals and media from the United Kingdom is already confirmed to attend.

International synergies

The initial forays of Gran Canaria's runway onto the international stage took place a few seasons ago in Germany, with a presentation during Berlin Fashion Week. This international trajectory further crystallized through the organization of the inaugural European Fashion Alliance summit, the pan-European fashion design consortium. This summit took place last October in Gran Canaria, on the eve of the swimwear runway.

The event saw participation from 59 attendees representing 23 countries, fostering a host of connections for international collaborations.

Cecilie Thorsmark, the CEO of Copenhagen Fashion Week, asserted, "The alliance between Copenhagen Fashion Week and Gran Canaria Swim Week stands as a testament to the power of collaboration within the fashion industry." She emphasized the pivotal role that collaborations and synergies between diverse international fashion weeks play in shaping the landscape.

She added, "While we present cutting-edge designs and innovative concepts in the ready-to-wear industry, Gran Canaria Swim Week celebrates the artistry and creativity within the realm of swimwear fashion. Together, these two platforms not only amplify the impact of both events but also underscore the diversity and inclusivity that define the modern fashion panorama."

Presently, Gran Canaria Swim Week by Moda Cálida boasts a comprehensive budget of 3 million euros for its program. Of this, 1.4 million euros are allocated from public investment for the orchestration of the runway. Since 2025, this event has been jointly organized with the renowned Madrid-based exhibition specialist, Ifema.

With around 45 swimwear brands on the island and a total of 32 national and international fashion brands participating in the 2025 edition of the runway, this project is firmly guided by collaboration with the Association of Spanish Fashion Designers (ACME).
