Ingka Group, the parent of Swedish furniture and homewares giant Ikea, has bought a second UK shopping mall, this time in Brighton.

The estimated £145 million buy for the 500,000 sq ft Churchill Square centre in the south coast town joins the former Kings Mall in London’s Hammersmith — renamed the Levit — in Ingka’s retail property portfolio.

Part of the group’s “global expansion strategy” it will allow the world’s largest furniture retailer to convert the former Debenhams Churchill Square site into a new store, expected to open within two years.

Centre owner, fund manager Abrdn, had hoped to sell it for £250 million when it was put on the market last year, but has agreed the cheaper deal with Ingka Centres, according to the property trade journal React News. Ingka did not comment on the price.

The Brighton mall also features major retailers Next, H&M and Skechers and Urban Outfitters.

Cindy Andersen, managing director of Ingka Centres, said Churchill Square “fits perfectly into our global expansion strategy, allowing us to transform a traditional retail space to a meeting place that is much more than just a place to shop.

“We’ve proven in Hammersmith that traditional shopping centres have a strong future when they are adapted and constantly evolving to match the real needs of local communities.”

Ikea is also converting the former Topshop flagship on London’s Oxford Circus, into one of its urban format stores, now expected to open in autumn 2025.
