UK footfall has been pretty unimpressive in recent weeks but in the latest seven-day period, it was up a pleasing 6.6% from the week before, helped by Mother’s day and the run-up to Easter, despite ongoing wet weather.

That’s according to MRI Software, which said high streets fared best with a 7.9% rise, but shopping centres and retail parks also saw rises of 6.2% and 4.4%, respectively.

And the evidence for Mother’s Day being a big contributor was clear because Friday was up 10% as the day drew near and Sunday itself was up 10.9%.

Importantly too, city shopping appeared to be recovering, helped by more and more workers returning to their offices.

On a week-on-week basis, Central London was up 5.3% and Greater London up 10.5% while regional cities excluding London rose 5.1%. Other towns also saw good results with coastal towns up 10.6%, market towns up 11% and historic towns up 10.9%.

On a year-on-year basis, the figures were even better with Central London rising 16.3% and Greater London 16.7%. Regional cities excluding London were up 13.8% while coastal towns rose 12.6% (even though the weather was generally worse than a year ago) market towns rose 17.7% and historic towns 15.7%.

Jenni Matthews, Marketing and Insights Director at MRI Software, said: “The week leading up to Mother’s Day, and two weeks out from the peak trading week for Easter, saw a significant rebound in footfall compared to the previous week and year on year. However, it’s important to note that some of the year on year rise in activity will be in response to a decline in activity experienced in the same week last year when adverse weather hit the UK impacting footfall in all retail destinations.

“It’s also very interesting to note, employees returned to offices and this was much more noticeable when compared with 2025 levels as highlighted in MRI Software’s Central London ‘Back to Office’ benchmark. This positive trend could be set to continue, and benefit retail, as more employers encourage regular office attendance, with Boots being the latest organisation asking for all staff to return 5 days a week from September.”
