John Lewis on Monday launched its first womenswear rental platform in a deal with rental specialist Hurr. Available at johnlewis.com/fashionrental, it hosts a range of exclusive John Lewis labels and introduces over 20 new contemporary brands.

The company said the aim is to “encourage a more sustainable way of shopping that doesn’t cost the Earth”.

It comes after a UK Parliament report said Britain buys more clothes per person than any other country in Europe, while the wider fashion industry is also said to account for 8%-10% of annual global carbon emissions.

“As a retailer, we need to provide our consumers with a more sustainable solution. This is why John Lewis Fashion Rental was created,” the company said.

Rental prices start from £20 for a “carefully curated” mix from the firm’s own-brands as well as from brands like Whistles and Somerset by Alice Temperley, and exclusive collaborations such as the upcoming Erica Davies + John Lewis collection.

Customers can choose to rent a garment for four, eight,10 or 20 days with next-day delivery if needed. Once the items have been chosen, the products will be posted directly to the address and included will be a pre-paid postage label for returns. The items will be dry cleaned by Hurr (using Oxwash responsible laundry services) and ready to be rented again.
