Consumption of factory foods and prepared foods increases the fatal risk of heart attack, stroke and Parkinson's disease. The results of the study were published in The Lancet Regional Health - Europe.

The study involved 400,000 people between the ages of 35 and 74. Scientists focused on analyzing the participants' diet and the amount of ultra-processed foods (UPF) consumed. This category includes ready meals, fast food, snacks and sugary drinks.

Results of a 16-year follow-up of subjects showed that active consumers of prepared meals and other foods high in fat, sugar and food additives were 25 percent more likely to die from Parkinson's disease. Junk food lovers were also about 10% less likely to survive a stroke or heart attack.

Additionally, it was found that eating a lot of ultra-processed food increased the overall risk of premature death by 4%.

Scientists explained that ready-to-eat foods, fast food, store-bought cakes, cookies and sausages typically undergo several stages of industrial processing that change the original physical structure of the food raw materials and increase the rate at which such foods are absorbed by the body.

Their consumption raises blood sugar levels, prevents effective satiety and damages the gut microbiome - the community of “friendly” bacteria that help maintain human health.

Food additives such as sweeteners, modified starches, thickeners and emulsifiers have also been linked to gut inflammation and hormonal reactions that can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke.
