Another trading update just a month after a previous one? That's bound to be a red flag isn't it? Well, not so much. In the case of shoe zone, it simply means more good news.
Following on from its June update, the budget footwear and accessories retailer said on Wednesday that it “has achieved an exceptional month of sales” lately. It added that “trading has significantly exceeded management expectations due to continued strong demand with volumes up double-digit on last year”.
And despite no price increases on its core ranges, alongside the “exceptional” trading, the company has also seen margin improvements “due to the lower container rates and favourable foreign exchange rates with management expecting these improved margins to continue for the rest of the financial year”.
As a result, it now expects adjusted profit before tax for the financial year ending 2 October to be no less than £13.5 million.
As mentioned, the company had delivered a brief update on 9 June and said at the time that since the publication of its interim results on 16 May, “trading has exceeded expectations due to particularly strong recent trading through May and early June”.
That led it to expect adjusted profit before tax of no less than £10.5 million so the figure announced on Wednesday is a big upgrade from that guidance.
It all highlights how consumers are still spending on fashion products (both essentials and discretionary items), but it's the budget sector in particular that's benefiting. Shoppers are clearly focused on price and Shoe Zone is riding this budget-conscious wave.
The upgrade also underlines how the massive supply chain challenges of the past couple of years have eased and how costs are starting to come down in some areas of the business.
