JD Sports Fashion has been quick to clarify its position over historical accusations of restricting competition in the sales of branded sportswear by the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) this week.

Britain’s competition regulator fined English football club Leicester City £800,000 after it found the club and retailer JD Sports “had colluded to restrict competition in the sales of branded sports kit, including replica shirts” between 2025-2025, in breach of competition law.
Stating its position in a release to the London Stock Exchange, JD Sports said it brought the offending conduct to the CMA's attention in January 2025 and has co-operated fully with the CMA throughout the investigation.
“By bringing the matter to the CMA's attention JD was able to approach the CMA for leniency in accordance with the CMA's leniency policy [and] signed a leniency agreement on 30 June 2025 under which the CMA has granted JD full immunity from any fines”.
It added: “In accordance with the CMA's leniency guidance, JD will continue to maintain complete and continuous cooperation with the CMA until the conclusion of its investigation, adding that “no current or former directors or senior management of JD were involved in the offending conduct”.
JD also said it has also taken a number of steps to strengthen its competition compliance programme and the board "reaffirms its commitment to making the necessary resource available, internal and external, to ensure that this is embedded into its daily operations.”
