Good, but not quite up to expectations. JD Sports Fashion’s trading update for the peak season released Thursday came with a ‘profits warning’ as the retailer outlined just how promotional it had to be to capture a more cautious consumer in the lead up to Christmas.
Of course, there are profit warnings and profit warnings and JD still expects full-year pre-tax earnings (ending 3 February) to be in the range of an impressive £915 million-£935 million.
Also weighing on the latest results were “very tough” comparisons with last year, an additional 200+ new JD stores opened, and apparel revenue growth impacted by milder weather from the second half of September.
The result was constant currency organic revenue growth of 6% and like-for-likes up 1.8% for the 22 weeks to 30 December. Full-year organic revenue growth is expected to come in around 8% higher.
So maybe not up to its own lofty expectations but it will still be regarded as a solid performance by some rivals and the envy of many.
Elsewhere, the gross margin rate for the period is in line with last year, again lower than expected due to those elevated levels of promotional activity. JD now expects its full-year gross margin rate will be slightly lower than last year.
It noted it also remains comfortable with its current stock position.
The sports, fashion and outdoor brands retailer said FY24 will also be impacted by a reclassification of certain capital expenditures into operating expenses, expected to be £7 million, and lower interest income of £8 million following the acquisition of ISRG NCI, as well as the previously announced dual running infrastructure costs.
CEO Régis Schultz added: “We have made good progress against our five-year strategic plan. We are confident in our strategy and we continue to invest in our supply chain, systems and stores, supported by our strong cash generation and healthy balance sheet.”
