People who consume little fruit and vegetables have more severe symptoms of depression, found the UNSW Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing in Sydney.  The results of the study were published in Scientific Reports (SciRep).

Scientists analyzed the relationship between fruit and vegetable consumption and symptoms of depression in 3483 twins from Australia, Denmark, Sweden and the United States for 11 years. Including twins in the study allows scientists to account for the influence of multiple factors unrelated to diet, due to the high degree of genetic similarity between the pairs (50-100%).

Researchers found that low fruit intake in the study averaged 0.3 servings per day and low vegetable intake averaged 0.5 servings per day. One serving usually refers to one small fruit (such as an apple or orange) weighing 80 g or four small fruits such as plums or apricots. One serving of vegetables is also one medium vegetable weighing 80 g or about a handful (or four tablespoons of chopped vegetables).

The researchers concluded that a lack of fruit in the diet is directly linked to poorer mental health. They suggest that the cause is a deficiency of fiber, vitamins and micronutrients that are important for maintaining normal brain function and fighting depression.
