Another day, another report suggesting that the festive season will be a tough one for UK retail. Park Christmas Savings said Wednesday that Christmas 2025 is set to cost families over £730 but Britons plan to spend less on it this year as the cost of living bites.

Its survey of 2,000 UK adults found that Christmas is the most stressful time of the year and finances are the number one cause of tension.

Some 71% of consumers struggle to budget for Christmas, with over half (55%) of those surveyed admitting they leave their Christmas financial planning too late – October being when the majority first start to think about their festive spending.

That £730 planned spending figure is down sharply from the £900 seen in 2025, and given the impact of inflation in the past 12 months, is an even bigger fall than it looks on the surface.

The survey showed that 23% of respondents are more worried about paying for Christmas this year compared to last as the cost-of-living crisis continues to bite.

It comes after a series of reports have suggested that Britons will be reining-in their spending this year. The comparisons are particularly tough given last year’s spending was boosted by pent-up demand after several years of no socialising or a low level of it linked to the pandemic.

The problem for the fashion sector is that one of the first areas of spend to be cut by cash-strapped shoppers are discretionary items like party wear. And expectations of less socialising this year add to this as the need for new party clothes and shoes is reduced.
