Scientists from Yale University have made progress in the three-dimensional organizing of the genome, identifying 21 key regulators of DNA structure. The discovery opens new avenues for the treatment of cancer, genetic disorders, and even anti-aging therapies. The research was published in the scientific journal Nature Methods.
Each human cell contains about two meters of DNA, packed into a nucleus the size of a grain of dust. This incredible compactness is achieved by a complex system of loops and folds that determine the activity of genes.
The aforesaid research team developed a platform called BARC-FISH, which combines CRISPR screening to turn off individual genes, DNA fluorescent labeling, and 3D chromatin visualization.
Among the discovered regulators, the scientists identified the genetic causes of eye cancer, autism, and cell aging.
According to the researchers, this discovery will help create drugs to correct DNA structure, develop anti-aging therapies for cells, and better treat genetic disorders.
