The British Retail Consortium announced some “good news for households” on Tuesday as price inflation went in the opposite direction to its trajectory of the last couple of years.

Prices didn’t actually fall, but the rate of growth in shop price inflation did, easing to just 1.3% in March, the BRC-NielsenIQ Shop Price Index showed.
It had been 2.5% in February and the slowdown last month means shop price inflation is at its lowest since December 2025.
Both food and non-food inflation eased this time, but with the former still running at a significant 3.7%, albeit lower than February’s 5%.
The big story, though, was in non-food where shop price inflation was a tiny 0.2% this time after 1.3% in February. That was also below the three-month average rate of 0.9% and the lowest figure since January 2025.
Helen Dickinson, the BRC’s Chief Executive, said inflation was affected by retailers’ strategies as they “continued to compete fiercely to bring prices down for their customers”. And she added that in non-food, prices of “electricals, clothing and footwear fell as retailers increased promotions to entice consumer spending”.
And while she stressed the good news for shoppers, she also highlighted how “retailers face significant increased cost pressures that could put progress on bringing down inflation at risk. These costs include a 6.7% business rates rise, ill-thought-out recycling proposals, and new border checks – all at the same time as the largest rise to the National Living Wage on record. The industry needs pro-growth government policy that supports investment and helps keep down prices for households up and down the country”.
