Leather goods restoration and luxury resale specialist The Handbag Clinic has secured “a significant” (but unspecified) capital injection to “accelerate its growth in the UK and internationally, and drive the technological development of its e-commerce platform”. It has also named a new Chair.

Its new cash injection comes from The North East Venture Fund (NEVF) supported by the European Regional Development Fund and managed by Mercia Ventures, with NEVF “displaying continued support for The Handbag Clinic by following their previous investments”. An unnamed private party has also joined the funding round.
The 25-year-old business said it has seen record growth over the last 12 months with turnover of £1.6 million in its last financial year likely to almost double and reach £3 million this year. Over the 12 months up to October, it doubled its average monthly e-commerce revenues from £160,000 to £325,000. And e-commerce traffic has risen 53% while e-commerce gross revenue rose 97%. Total orders have increased by 57%.
The company is the longest-established luxury aftercare and resale retailer in the UK and has diversified to cover shoes and leather clothing.
We’re told it’s also “the only fully circular platform tackling the end-of-life issue. Through its offering of ‘Buy, Sell, Restore, Authenticate’, uniquely combining restoration with authentication and resale, it adds value directly back into wardrobes through an ongoing loop of circularity”.
Importantly, along with the new investment, the company has boosted its board with “award-winning entrepreneur and global brand Chair and ex-CEO” Tracy Lewis joining as its new Chair.
The company said Lewis “brings a wealth of experience and knowledge from the fashion, beauty, consumer and retail and impact investment sectors. Her illustrious 35+ year career leading and supporting brands to achieve global growth include Wacoal, Eylure, Additional Lengths and Bluebella and [she] brings valuable expertise and insight. Lewis has been instrumental in several business exits, realising significant shareholder value, and takes active involvement in mentoring and developing teams to accelerate their business growth”.
Meanwhile, Will Chalk (formerly of Alphagenix, Mococo, and Noggin HQ) has been appointed as Chief Technical Officer. And former Aftersales Manager for Chanel, John Cunningham is The Handbag Clinic’s new Customer Service & Operations Manager.

The company said that its sustained growth and its previous NEVF investment mean it has been able to double the size of its team to 55 in a little over two years and a further 10 new roles will be added next year across finance, tech, marketing and in “creating the next generation of artisans”.
Ian Wilson of Mercia Ventures said: “With sustainability a key issue for luxury fashion brands and consumers, the resale market continues to grow. The Handbag Clinic has established itself as the trusted aftercare service for the biggest luxury brands. This latest investment will help the company to continue its growth trajectory and pursue its ambition to become the leading global authority for pre-loved handbags.”
CEO and co-founder, Charlotte Staerck, added: “It’s been an incredible year for us and we’re excited that, with this capital injection and our new board members, we can realise our ambitious growth plans. Tracy, Will and John are exceptionally talented – their unrivalled knowledge and expertise will add huge value as we take the business to the next level.”
