UK supermarket giant Sainsbury's is planning to close 100 Argos high street stores in the next 12 month the as part of an ongoing rationalisation programme.

Closures will begin quicky as the brand continues to move to a concession format within Sainsbury’s stores.

Locations in Cardiff and Newport will be the earmarked to close first, alongside branches in Hull, Grimsby and Scunthorpe, according to the Retail Gazette. Argos has already shuttered 37 stores this year, including all 34 in Ireland.

Twenty five new Argos concessions have recently opened inside its supermarkets, with plans for 30 more, leaving Argos with around 180 standalone stores.

By next year, the retailer plans to have around 430-460 counters within Sainsbury's supermarkets. This includes click & collect counters in smaller stores, as well as the full concessions in larger branches.

New Argos stores will also open inside Sainsbury’s Grimsby and Sainsbury’s Scunthorpe next month.

Sainsbury’s, which owns both Argos and Habitat, is also closing all standalone Habitat branches. And in February, the supermarkets giant said it was planning to close two Argos depots over the next three years.
