First impressions do count and Fenwick has plans for a statement new look for its flagship Newcastle store. The UK department stores operator plans to create a new frontage for its Tyneside store as part of a £40 million multi-year investment makeover.

The “next generation” upgrade will demonstrate the retailer’s “longstanding commitment” to the city, it said in announcing its plans as part of the store’s 140th anniversary celebrations.
The planning application involves a refurbished façade on Northumberland Street featuring a new central entrance, a modern canopy while also opening up the ground floor windows.
The Newcastle store has played a key role within the centre of the city where the company is based since 1882.
The design for the frontage has been led by architect Ben Mailen who has close ties to the city with his team given access to Fenwick's historic archives, with the design being inspired by the many changes the Newcastle store has undergone over the last 140 years.
The new storefront is said to be a re-interpretation of important moments in Fenwick’s history. For instance, it includes the restoration of the central doors and curved shopfronts that were a big part of the original design, as well as the prominent canopy from the early post-war years.
The major investment plan announced in March will see the modernisation of the whole store carried out in phases over the next five years. So far, works at the store have included opening up two new central atria and the ongoing renovation of the beauty hall.
In September, the retailer also launched its first ever ad campaign, featuring slogans including ‘Quiet no more’ and ‘Give them something to talk about’ as it looks to reach out to a new generation of customers.
The group, which operates nine stores across England, is also planning to close its Bond Street, London, store. Rumoured to be worth more than £400 million, the sale proceeds would help investment in revamping other stores.
