Following its restructuring, Düsseldorf-based fashion retailer Peek & Cloppenburg (P&C) is considering reducing the surface area of some of its 69 sites in Germany. The shops are certainly profitable, but something needs to be done in the medium term, company director Thomas Freude told the regional daily Rheinische Post on Monday. "We are going to reduce the surface area of some pf the fashion shops." Mixed-use concepts will emerge, which will include hotels or offices in the same building. According to Freude, this should result in higher sales and profits for the shops. "We will avoid discount shopping". A fashion retailer can only survive if goods are not resold too often at disocunted prices. "In future, we will only be offering discounts on specific items at the end of the season, in order to clear stocks. Discounts on the entire range, including new merchandise, will no longer be offered in this way," said the director.
P&C was restructured last year as part of a self-managed insolvency procedure. The company was in difficulty due to the pandemic, the impact of the war in Ukraine and online trading. According to Freude, this sector, like many others, continues to be unprofitable. "We have relied too much on online shopping and invested in new customers - but that entails the risk of accumulating substantial losses." Today, the company is on the verge of breaking even and becoming profitable in the long term. According to Freude, digital commerce accounts for 10% of P&C's total sales, and this figure is set to rise to 10-15% in the future.
The North Rhine-Westphalian company should not be confused with Peek & Cloppenburg Hamburg, which is a separate company.
