In recent years, technology has become an integral part of our daily lives: today, it largely determines how we work, communicate and interact with the world. However, despite the widespread availability of digital tools, there remains a significant gap between access to these technologies and the ability to use them effectively, according to Marianne Marcucci, Vice-Chair of ALL DIGITAL (Belgium).

According to her, the number of people who have access to modern digital public infrastructure is growing every year. On the other hand, not everyone has the knowledge to use these technologies correctly and competently. Many, especially the older generation, lack the knowledge to ensure their own safety when using digital technologies: they do not know what cybersecurity is, cyberbullying, do not know how they can be deceived or misled and how to avoid all this.

Others also do not know or understand the full potential of the tools available to them, and therefore cannot use them to their full potential.

“We at All Digital often say that for many people, digital technology is like giving a Ferrari to someone who has just gotten their driver’s license. It’s a great car, but the person won’t be able to use it to its full potential,” the specialist noted.

The reason for this problem is probably that digital tools are becoming more accessible, but the same cannot be said about information on how to use these tools correctly. A simple example given by the specialist: the state or some private company can create a very promising and convenient digital service, but not explain in detail what capabilities this service has, how to use it and what risks there may be that should be known.

According to Marianna Marcucci, the state, private companies that have any digital services, and various NGOs should be involved in disseminating all this information.

"We must all work together to achieve a common goal - to increase the digital literacy of the population," the specialist noted.
