The consequences of pandemics can be more severe in terms of death toll and economic damage than the impacts of wars. This warning was issued to the global community by the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who expressed concern over cuts in aid for health programs in developing countries.
He made his remarks during a meeting of G20 finance ministers and central bank governors. The text of his speech was published by the WHO press service.
"A pandemic can kill more people and cause greater economic disruption than a war," Ghebreyesus said. "The COVID-19 pandemic claimed the lives of about 20 million people and cost the global economy more than $10 trillion," he noted. The WHO chief stressed that "health security is economic security," and both are "under threat due to sharp reductions in official development assistance and disruptions in trade, creating major challenges for health services in many developing countries, especially in Africa."
The WHO is helping countries accelerate the "transition from aid dependency to self-sufficiency by improving efficiency and mobilizing domestic resources, including through taxes on tobacco and alcohol, as well as through public health insurance." However, Ghebreyesus acknowledged that many countries "will still require significant concessional loans from development banks on favorable terms and conditions."
