Asics has responded to criticism of the brand as it moves to reduce the number of independent stockists that carry the label in the UK, saying retail partners remain crucial to its UK ops but it needs to focus on those it can properly support.

This week it emerged that some of the UK independents stocking the brand have received emails telling them supplies would be halted from January.
This followed other major names such as Nike and Adidas focusing more on direct-to-consumer and larger partner stockists.
An Asics spokesperson told Fashionetwork.com that it’s “partner-focused” and “a diverse and varied retailer base of small to big partners is an integral part of our strategy and key to our future. In the UK, the vast majority of our revenue is generated through partners, from speciality retailers to large sporting goods retailers”.
It added that it prioritises its partners’ business over its own direct channels “because we believe our partners can add tremendous value and expertise to ensure people are moving in the right sports gear”.
But recently it “reviewed the partners we worked with in the UK. Our goal is to ensure we provide the best support to all our partners, and unfortunately, we can’t provide that support everywhere and to everyone. As a result, we have had to make the difficult decision to cease supplying Asics products to some UK businesses”.
The company said it continues to work with independent retailers with several hundred stores across the country.
