The John Lewis Partnership talked of reduction and expansion on two different fronts Monday. On the one hand, the UK retail giant is planning to halve its London HQ size by relocating to Pimlico after thousands of staff opted to work from home.

On the other, the Partnership is making some big changes to its deliveries strategy. By “bringing even more access and convenience to its customers” it’s expanding its same-day delivery service to more cities following initial success in London.

Customers in Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham can now use the same-day service, which launched in the capital last August.

Shoppers will be able to order an item online by 10am for delivery between 7pm and 10pm the same evening. All deliveries to customers are made by fully electric vehicles, it noted.

The service, which costs £9.95 a delivery, has proved most popular for fashion and home accessories.

At the same time JLP is further extending its Click & Collect network with the launch of 72 new outlets in Dobbies Garden Centres. This takes the total number of collection points to 5,700.

Improvements have also been made to its Deliver to Yodel Store service (formerly known as Collect+ delivered by Yodel), making it free over £30. A total of 90% of the UK population now has access to free, next day collections within 10 minutes of their home, the retailer noted.

And after a pause of over two years, the retailer is also restarting deliveries of larger items, such as large electrical appliances and furniture, in Northern Ireland.

Eva Cullen, Head of Customer Fulfilment Operations at John Lewis, said: “We always want to improve the service for our customers and there’s been a real appetite for same day deliveries. With customers using it for purchases of everything from bed sheets to toothbrushes — we are confident this service could have even more potential in the future.”

In London, the Partnership’s HQ is to move from Victoria to the former Metropolitan Police’s former offices in nearby Pimlico. The new location spans 108,000 sq ft in comparison to its current 220,000 sq ft office space.

Lucy Brown, Director of Central Operations at John Lewis Partnership, told the Evening Standard: “This relocation reflects our flexible working policy which enables our partners to combine working from home, with time in the office and our other sites.”

The move, expected to take place next summer, comes as John Lewis aims to cut costs to the tune of £600 million.
