In a promised first, Boots has now opened its beauty-only flagship store within the Battersea Power Station mall in south London.

This is a big deal for the firm (and for the mall) and marks a change of strategy for a company that has always combined both its beauty operations and its health business in its stores. The store will be a testbed for beauty features that may be rolled out to other locations and also makes a strong statement in an ever-more-competitive market.
For instance, the beauty market in the UK that Boots used to dominate is now heavily populated with a wide range of retailers across the price scale. That could mean Superdrug, which has been expanding fast in beauty, or the H Beauty chain created by Harrods. Next and M&S are also growing their beauty offers, then there are specialists like Space NK that are also growing.
Boots said the statement the Battersea launch comes as the health & beauty retail giant “continues to transform its beauty offering, following the revamp of over 170 beauty halls across the UK over the last three years”.
First announced in August, the new 11,200 sq ft ‘Boots Beauty’ concept store offers over 250 curated beauty brands across skincare, cosmetics, bodycare, haircare and fragrance, “offering top-to-toe beauty solutions to suit all budgets” alongside new “industry-leading” skincare services.
New brands launching at the store and online include R.E.M Beauty, Kerastase, Shu Uemura and Bubble.
There will be a health element: a key store feature will be a resident dermatologist-trained pharmacist offering free consultations and clinical advice on a variety of skin concerns. And Boots said this expertise will also be rolled out to selected stores in the future.
The dermatologist, Dr Justine Hextall, will offer consultations for customers with skin concerns. In a private space, the dermatologist-trained pharmacist will provide one-to-one clinical advice for conditions including acne, rosacea, eczema and psoriasis.
Meanwhile, a ‘supersize’ beauty studio offers free specialist beauty advice, tutorials and demos, including skin scan, scalp analysis and express beauty services.
Additionally, the store is home to a new team of 35 Boots Beauty Specialists, who join the existing 1,000-strong ‘Beauty Crew’ already in stores across the UK. For the first time, Specialists can provide customers with free Skin Scan services using a NEXA skin imaging tool for in-depth analysis, advice and brand-neutral product recommendations.
Also in a ‘Boots-first’, the store will offer Dermalux LED Light Treatment services, which uses light waves to accelerate natural skin regeneration and repair – customers can book an appointment via boots.com at a cost of £60 a treatment.
Boots’ own No7 skincare brand will also offer a range of services in the store, including its new Skin Solutions Service.
Other new features in-store include a Hair Bar that offers a professional scalp analysis service for support with hair damage and thinning hair. There will also be weekly hair demonstrations and styling services from Dyson and Drybar.
The store also contains a new-concept Fragrance Discovery Bar with a refill station too, interactive product display and a digital fragrance finder. A dedicated beauty product recycling station is also located in the store and includes a free-of-charge gift wrap service.
Jenna Ward, Head of Beauty Reinvention at Boots, said: “The new Boots Beauty store… provides a platform for us to test the latest brands and new service innovations before we introduce them to customers shopping in our stores across the country.”
