The growing popularity of thrift shopping in the UK — especially for fashion — has prompted a listing of the top 50 cities with the greatest number of charity shops, antique fairs and car boot sales.

Leading the list for thrifty and sustainable shopping is Cambridge (84 charity shops, five antique fairs, and 24 car boot sales) with searches for thrift terms per 100,000 people adding up to 1,256, according to discount save site Savoo.
Oxford was placed second (107 charity shops, seven antique fairs and 24 boot fairs) with thrift searches topping 1,173.
It’s perhaps no coincidence that those are two of the best-known UK university cities with huge student populations.
The top-10 cities were rounded out by Nottingham, Derby, Norwich, Reading, Slough, Blackpool, Birkenhead and Bournemouth, all of which have their own universities, branches of universities or colleges.
Meanwhile, Newport was ranked as the worst city for thrift shopping, with no car boot sales or antique fairs found in the area, while Edinburgh (other university town) has the highest demand for sustainable shopping, with over 8,000 searches around the topic made per month.
Ed Fleming, Managing Director at Savoo said: “Thrifty shopping continues to gain popularity and has no doubt been heightened by the cost-of-living crisis that has caused many individuals' disposable income to be reduced.”
