Neuralink has successfully performed the first implantation of its brain chip in a patient with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This was announced by the company's CEO, Elon Musk, on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
The third person in the world to receive a Neuralink implant is Bradford Smith, a resident of Arizona, USA. Suffering from almost complete paralysis due to his condition, Smith now has the ability to interact with a computer by typing text that is then synthesized into speech.
Bradford Smith himself, using the capabilities of the new implant, shared his status on social media X, noting that he is the first person with ALS and the first non-verbal user of the Neuralink chip. Neuralink CEO Elon Musk also called on users via social media to reach out to Smith with questions, fostering public dialogue.
In his posts, Smith describes the difficulties of his life but expresses satisfaction with his current situation. He shared that his body is nearly completely immobile, except for limited control over the corners of his mouth and eyes. He is also dependent on a ventilator to maintain his life functions.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a rare, incurable degenerative disease of the central nervous system that affects motor neurons. One of the most famous individuals to suffer from this disease was the British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking, who passed away in 2025.
