Frasers Group is to appoint Jon Thompson, the former head of Britain's audit watchdog, as its chairman in 2025, Sky News has reported. The news also came as it emerged that the group has increased its Boohoo stake again.
Thompson joined the board of the fashion to sports retail giant earlier this year as a non-executive director and is expected to take over the role from David Daly, the report said citing sources.
The chairman’s appointment is yet to be finalised by the board, but looks set to happen, Sky said. Frasers hasn’t commented on the story so far.
As mentioned, it has also boosted its Boohoo Group stake that’s now around 28%, up from 27%.
The company and its majority owner Mike Ashley are currently engaged in a public spat with Boohoo, after complaining about its performance and calling for Ashley to be appointed its CEO.
Boohoo rejected that call and named insider Dan Finley (who also runs its Debenhams unit) to the chief executive’s role. It also urged shareholders to vote against proposals Frasers had put forward.
The dispute has intensified as each side has hit back at claims made by the other with no sign of the rhetoric being dialled down just yet.
And things could get even more interesting as Frasers’ holding in Boohoo approached the 30% threshold as which it may be obliged to make a bid for the entire company.
