Hot on the heels of its expansion news in the US this week, Primark on Thursday announced that it will invest more than £100 million in its UK stores this year, which includes more than £75 million of new money in addition to what was already announced 15 months ago.

It comes in the year that the company marks its half-century in Britain and sees the retailer planning to “transform existing stores and open the doors on much anticipated new stores”.

Some 700 new jobs are being created in 2025 as a result of the new locations and upsizings.

A new Bury St. Edmunds store will open on 6 March, with new shops at Teesside Park and Glasgow Fort coming later in the year.

As for store extensions, London’s Westfield Stratford store will almost double in size to more than 81,000 sq ft to become the second-largest Primark in the capital. And Metrocentre in Gateshead, Tyneside, will grow to almost 80,000 sq ft of total shopping space once reopened later this year.

It will also relocate stores in Bradford, High Wycombe and Bolton to “new and improved sites”, while 15 existing stores will be refurbished this year as part of its ongoing refit programme, with more to follow. As well as upgrading décor and store fixtures, it will continue to roll out LED lighting as part of its carbon footprint reduction plan.

The works will take the chain to 195 UK stores and almost 8 million sq ft of selling space by the end of the year. Additionally, two new store locations in Epsom, Surrey, and Newbury, Berkshire, are also confirmed and are set to open from 2025. They’ll add over 55,000 sq ft of new retail space.

As mentioned, it’s the firm’s UK anniversary year and it has grown a lot since its first store opened in Derby in 1974. Primark now employs more than 30,000 people in the UK.

Outside of the UK, it’s in 15 other countries and has the ambition to reach 530 stores across its markets by the end of 2026.
