The Japanese method to regrow new teeth, an invention that is both revolutionary and controversial because of the unclear functionality of such teeth, has sparked controversy among researchers, said Chengfei Zhang, a clinical professor in endodontics at the University of Hong Kong.
"The assertion that humans possess latent tooth buds capable of producing a third set of teeth is both revolutionary and controversial," Chengfei told AFP.
This scientific discovery—by the Medical Research Institute Kitano Hospital in Osaka, Japan—which selects patients with aplasia (the absence of six or more teeth), raises the question of whether such "new teeth" can functionally and esthetically replace the patients' pre-existing natural teeth.
Japanese researchers claim that they have succeeded in developing a drug that stimulates the regrowth of teeth instead of lost teeth.
