Avanesyan has been representing Armenia since August 2025. She was assisted by the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of Armenia, the Keron Development Foundation, and the Armenian Tennis Federation in changing her sports citizenship and getting Armenian citizenship.
Avanesyan recapped her 2025 season for NEWS.am Sport, told about the importance of representing Armenia, New Year's mood, and childhood memories.
Elina, thank you for your time. First, I'd like for us to recap 2025. How did it work out for you?
2025 was a very full and important year for me. It was a year of progress, new challenges, and important decisions. It was special that I started representing Armenia with the support of the Keron Foundation, the Ministry [of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of Armenia], and the [Armenian] Tennis Federation. This gave special meaning to my competitions and inspired me to achieve new accomplishments.
How would you rate the year in sports career?
This year was marked by significant progress. I've played several successful tournaments, improved my game, and taken a step forward in my career; in any case, there's always room for improvement. Representing Armenia inspired me to work harder. I want my results to motivate the younger generation to try their hand at tennis.
This year you changed your sports citizenship and you are representing Armenia. What did it mean to you? To what extent did tennis player Elina Avanesyan's life change?
For me, this was a significant step that opened a new chapter in my life. It is a great honor to represent Armenia, I am proud of this opportunity. This decision gave me additional motivation and responsibility. All this became possible with the support of the Keron Development Foundation, which played a major role in the process of obtaining [Armenian] citizenship, provided the necessary assistance, and believed in my choice.
How did the second part of the competition year go - now as a representative of Armenia? After changing your sports citizenship, is there a change in the attitude of your competitors, fans, and the sports community?
The second part of the season was tense in terms of emotions, I felt huge support from Armenia and Armenian fans. This support inspires me to continue and achieve new results. Now, each of my victories is not only an individual achievement, but also an occasion to be proud of the country that I represent.
What do you consider your main achievement in 2025?
My main achievement is staying focused and the ability to move forward despite difficulties. This year has shown that I can overcome any challenge. It is especially important for me that I can serve as an example for the young tennis players of Armenia. What makes this year special for me is the realization that I can inspire children with my experience to try their hand at tennis and believe in their dreams.
And the shortcoming?
I consider some games where I could have done better as shortcoming. But I take it as a worthwhile experience that helps me get better.
Do you have a dream come true in 2025?
My realized dream was to get the opportunity to compete under the flag of Armenia, and to become stronger as a tennis player. This move gave special meaning to my competitions. Every game and training of 2025 helped me discover my potential and realize that I am on the right track.

The most memorable day was my first match under the flag of Armenia. It was a day full of emotions and pride, as if a new phase in my career was beginning.
What are your thoughts on seeing off 2025?
My thoughts are about becoming stronger, how to continue to improve my results, to have new achievements in 2025 for me and Armenia, so as to make fans happy, to inspire new athletes from Armenia.
Do you like the New Year, the holidays? What makes it special for you?
In recent years, I've been spending New Year's in Australia, where I'm participating in a tournament. It's still unusual for me because I'm celebrating New Year without my family. I'm trying to create a festive mood for myself.
What are your childhood memories of New Year’s?
New Year's was always a family holiday for me in my childhood. We watched holiday movies with the whole family, eagerly waited for the bells to ring, and enjoyed delicious home-cooked meals. I remember those warm and loving evenings with great pleasure.
What was the most impressive gift from Santa?
When I first started playing tennis, I received a [tennis] racket as a gift. It was my most memorable gift from Santa.
Giving or receiving gifts?
I like to give gifts more. It is always nice to see the smiles of loved ones.
How do you like to celebrate, spend the holidays?
I like to celebrate the holidays in a family atmosphere. The most important thing for me is a calm and warm atmosphere.
Do you like decorating a Christmas tree?
Yes. I really like to decorate the Christmas tree. A Christmas tree always creates a festive mood and a sense of comfort.
What is your favorite dish from the holiday table?
It's hard to choose just one. All the dishes on the holiday table are very tasty. I like to try a little bit of everything.
Do you believe in the New Year’s miracle?
I believe in the New Year's miracle, and also in the fact that you yourself can create the miracle with your own hands.
If you met with Santa?
If I met Santa, I would say thanks for the miracle that he brings. I would ask for health and energy for me to continue to improve and achieve my goals in the new year.
What is your New Year's tale?
For me, the New Year's tale is an opportunity to start everything from a new page, believe in the best, and find joy in the simple moments that make this season special.
What dreams and goals are you welcoming 2025?
I dream about new victories, improving my game, and achieving stability. I hope in 2025 I will be able to realize my goals, to make those who support and believe in me happy with my success.
