Specialists from the Samara State Medical University (SamSMU) of the Russian Ministry of Health have developed a unique physiotherapy suit for sports and rehabilitation, the university told TASS.
According to the SamSMU press service, this development will help restore human neuromuscular connections by using electrical stimulation.
“Such technology is already used in order to train athletes of federal teams, as well as to maintain the physical fitness of astronauts. However, the proposed method differs from all previously used ones, as it is based on a different type of signal: sinusoidal modulated currents. The shape of sinusoidal modulated currents is wave-like, due to which a gradual increase and decrease in the intensity of training is achieved. Moreover, the technique is completely painless and comfortable to use, achieving the necessary positive effect,” the report says.
The suit uses wireless control technology, which enables the user to train not only at home or in the gym, but also while walking or traveling. The SamSMU press service noted that the suit can be used by the elderly as well, as it reduces the load on the joints during training.
“The range of possible applications of the suit is quite wide: from fitness training to improving physical fitness and losing weight to rehabilitation and recovery after surgeries and injuries. The project also solves an important social problem: the lack of physical activity among the population, which is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases,” said Olga Germanova, Director of the International Centre for Education and Research in Cardiovascular Pathology and Cardiovisualization at SamSMU.
Clinical trials have shown positive results.
"After 12 training sessions, each lasting 14 minutes, there was a statistically significant increase in metabolic rate according to bioimpedance measurements. In addition, a trend towards improving vascular age indicators was found. This indicator is key for assessing the condition of the arteries and predicting complications associated with atherosclerosis. The technique did not negatively affect ECG data, so it is safe in this training complex," the report says.
