Sooner or later, a new pandemic will occur. And this is not a theoretical risk, but an epidemiological certainty. This opinion was expressed by the Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
Speaking at the opening of the thirteenth meeting of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body (INB), which is preparing an agreement on pandemic prevention, he recalled the severe consequences of the COVID-19 outbreak in the world, emphasizing that the next pandemic will not wait. According to Ghebreyesus, this is not a theoretical risk, but an epidemiological certainty.
The WHO chief repeated his earlier assumption that a new pandemic could break out in 20 or more years, or maybe tomorrow. But it will happen, and in any case, they must be prepared, he said.
According to official figures, 7 million people have died from COVID-19, but they estimate the real number at 20 million. In addition to human casualties, the pandemic has destroyed more than $10 trillion in global economic value, Ghebreyesus said.
But he expressed confidence in the possibility of reaching a consensus in the negotiations on the pandemic agreement. The WHO chief assured that such an agreement will in no way infringe on the sovereignty of any WHO member state, but on the contrary, will strengthen national sovereignty and international action.
