Conclave has won best film at the British Academy Film Awards.
The film, starring Ralph Fiennes and directed by Edward Berger, is a thriller about the election of a new pope. It won four awards at the British Oscars, commonly known as the BAFTAs. The other three were in the minor categories of best editing, best adapted screenplay, and outstanding British film.
Conclave beat out Sean Baker's Anora and Brady Corbet's The Brutalist, about a Jewish architect (Adrien Brody) rebuilding his life in the United States after the Holocaust, to win best film. “We live in a time of crisis of democracy, and the institutions that are usually used to unite us are being used to divide us,” Conclave director Edward Berger said in his acceptance speech. “It’s hard to have faith in a situation like this sometimes, but that’s why we make films, and that’s why we made this film.”
The Brutalist was also considered a favorite for Best Picture, winning Best Director for Brady Corbet and Best Actor for Adrien Brody.
“This film is really about the desire to leave something meaningful behind, and I think that’s something we can all relate to,” Brody said in his acceptance speech.
The Brutalist also won for Original Score and Cinematography.
One of the big surprises of the night was Maika Madison’s win for Best Actress for her role as an exotic dancer who falls in love with the son of a Russian oligarch, in Anora.
Many considered the front-runners to be Demi Moore, who won multiple awards for her performance in Substance, and Britain's Marianne Jean-Baptiste for her critically acclaimed portrayal of a woman struggling with depression in The Hard Truth. "I really didn't expect that," Madison said. "I want to take a moment to pay tribute to the sex worker community... you deserve respect and human decency. I will always be your friend."
Considered a strong contender for awards season after winning at the Critics Choice Awards and the Producers and Directors Guild of America Awards ahead of next month's Oscars, Anora was also nominated for best picture.
