Almost a third of UK consumers have started Christmas shopping already. But the the fashion and beauty industries can breath easily as those 30 percenters are mostly made up of those buying Christmas cards, decorations, wrapping paper, gift bags and long-life snacks purchases, a survey by American Express shows.

That said, department stores started opening their Christmas shops last month with more than one offering winter wonderland for anyone who feels festive.

Those who have started their seasonal spending have already spent £94 on average on gifts, the research based on 2,000 adults interviewed found.

Some 41% of shoppers said that deals and offers would influence their decisions to purchase gifts for family and friends, compared with 16% who said gift guides were key, and 14% who said they were swayed into making purchases by Christmas ads (which haven’t started yet).

Meanwhile, 79% also said it is important to support local businesses when shopping.

Andrei Ciripitca, vice-president at American Express, said: “The festive period is an important time for businesses and shoppers alike, and we continue to see many people spreading their Christmas shopping throughout the year.”

It will be interesting to see how the cost-of-living crisis affects Christmas this year and how much this drives the bulk of shopping towards Black Friday rather than the traditional shopping month of December.
