With a decent run of chilly and wet weather, the UK’s AW23 outerwear season has finally got under way country-wide and retailer House of Fraser said some clear style winners are emerging.

We’re told that “shearling coats are set to be the coat of the season”, with demand for this style up 9,548% this year (and with faux shearing also presumably seeing higher demand at more affordable price levels).
But puffers remain the biggest sellers overall for the department store chain. Trends may come and go but the puffer’s extreme practicality and light weight combined with major insulating properties, has kept it as a must-have for many UK women for years now.
HoF said it’s also seeing clear trends in outerwear colours. The coat colours with the biggest uplift are revealed as metallic and orange shades.
Black is unsurprisingly the most popular colour overall with blue in second place (and 34,633 blue units have been sold in the last year). But as mentioned, metallics are having a moment with an 8,610% increase year on year, while orange coats have risen 126%.
Metallics were a key trend on the runways for the season with coats such as Dries Van Noten’s pieces in hand-painted gold being highly influential. And metallics have spread through other categories for this season with silver and gold being particularly strong for jeans. So again, it’s no surprise that HoF is seeing metallics trending in outerwear.
