Pepco’s Poundland operation is to take over the leases of 71 stores from the failed Wilko chain with all of those stores set to be rebranded under the Poundland name.

And administrator PWC said there are hopes the deal will “create a platform for future employment opportunities”, although it’s unclear how many jobs would be created and whether Wilko staff might take precedence when it comes to hiring for the rebranded stores.

With the 51 stores that are also being bought by discounter B&M, that makes 122 stores out of the 400-strong Wilko chain that are accounted for. But if no further deals to take on large numbers of stores are made, it will leave some major empty properties on UK high streets and in retail parks.

The size of the stores in the Wilko chain would undeniably have been appealing for Poundland and the large floor space suggests that the company will include its budget fashion range Pep & Co in many of the branches, as well as its expanded beauty offer.

The news about Poundland’s purchase came on the same day as store closures began in the Wilko chain and just a day after news that talks over a potential rescue deal had ended.
