M&S had a nightmare weekend as its website and app were both down for hours on busy shopping day Saturday. But it could have a happier time this week as it’s predicted to report bumper results on Wednesday.
The company apologised to customers on Saturday after technical issues meant consumers couldn’t shop online with the retailer. Coming at a time when it has just launched it summer campaign and when the sun finally shone consistently in the UK, it’s a frustrating issue for the business that might have hoped it would be a bumper sales weekend for summer collections.
The company said a third-party service provider was experiencing a “technical issue” that caused the problem.
But as mentioned, better news is expected in two days’ time with analysts expecting a big jump in M&S’s full-year profits. If correct, that would follow a succession of improved results under CEO Stuart Machin and his predecessor Steve Rowe who’ve finally seemed able to put in place the long-promised turnaround for the business.
AJ Bell analysts predict a 35% rise in underlying pre-tax profits to £653 million in the year to this April with revenues up 8.9%.
That would be a particularly pleasing increase given how tough many other retailers selling the categories on which M&S focuses have found the past year.
That said, analysts have also said sales may have slowed in the final six months of its financial year so the outlook for the current period will be closely watched.
