The UK has come out as one of the most online-focused countries of shoppers globally in a new study by e-commerce platform Ubuy. The study underlines the importance of e-commerce in modern retail, despite the well-publicised challenges in the sector post-pandemic.

Asos

Ubuy looked at the total annual e-commerce revenue for the world, alongside determining the average annual spend per capita, and the percentage of income spent based on average annual household income.

Its research found that global per capita e-commerce spend came out at $496 a year and when broken down in comparison to countries’ average annual income, around 5.7% of it is spent on e-commerce alone worldwide.

Interestingly, when analysing the data for the UK, it found that online shoppers spend 7.2% of their annual income on e-commerce. This means that the UK has the ninth-highest volume of online purchases in the world.

But what’s particularly significant is that the UK was the only Western country on a list that includes a large number of less developed markets, as well as two well-publicised giant e-tail-focused countries.

It may be no surprise that China, where shoppers spend 11.6% of their average income online, is at number two as. Also, well-known as a strong e-tail market, South Korea sees e-shoppers spending 8.4% of their average income online so features at number five.

But other markets might come as more of a surprise. Top of the list is Lebanon (13.5% of average income), with Iran third (11.6%) and Kyrgyzstan fourth (10.3%).

After South Korea is Sudan (9.1%), Moldova (7.9%), and Mongolia (7.5%). With the UK in ninth spot, Bhutan rounds out the top 10 (7.1%).
