London’s Burlington Arcade has announced a number of major signings and openings this year and the latest for the Mayfair tourist hotspot is Johnstons of Elgin.

The arrival of the label this week links two historic names with Johnstons having been founded in 1797 and the arcade opening a few years later in 1819.

Johnstons said its opening “marks a true union of two British institutions. We believe this new destination will attract those with a deep appreciation for British craftsmanship, those with a penchant for travel, and the discerning local customer”.

The new store, referred to as a ‘House’, is spread over three floors and “will celebrate the very best of Scottish craftsmanship”. The ground floor features a hand-carved Scottish timber and stone table by the sculptor Oliver Spendley to showcase the label’s accessories.

On the first floor, it has created “an intimate private dressing room”, with the space dressed in a bespoke rug by Scottish rugmaker Turnberry, woven with Johnstons’ own recycled cashmere fibre.

Peppered throughout the House, customers will also discover other hand-crafted Scottish furniture, accessories, and ceramics.

As for products, the company said the store “will celebrate” all of its product categories, from Ready-to-Wear to Accessories and Home.

And its commercial chief Oscar MacDonald said: “Burlington Arcade is one of the jewels of Mayfair, curating brands that celebrate the very best of British craftsmanship today. For over a century, it has been the home of cashmere in London — the ultimate destination for the discerning customer seeking to discover the very best of our craft.”
