The company that owns the Joe Bloggs brand and also occasionwear/bridal brand Elizabeth Emanuel has become the latest major UK name to fail.
On Monday (January 29), the day that retailer East filed for administration, we also learnt that Juice Corporation had called in administrators late last week with insolvency practitioner CG & Co now in control at the company.
But unlike East, where an attempt is being made to save jobs, all of Juice's 60 staff are reported to have been let go.
Joe Bloggs had once been a big name in the UK fashion sector. Founded in 1985 by Shami Ahmed, it hit big in the late 80s and 90s and was closely associated with the Manchester music scene, its baggy jeans being worn by the Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets and many of their fans. It was also responsible for producing a number of celebrity ranges but later went into decline.
Ahmed was at one point a multi-millionaire but was declared bankrupt in 2009.
Juice Corporation bought the businesses assets and also found itself owning royal wedding dress label Elizabeth Emanuel. It faced a six-year court fight from Emanuel herself to win control of that label but eventually won the right to use the name and launched an eveningwear, nightwear and lingerie line.
The company is also a licensee for brands including Slazenger and Kangol as well as owning Gabicci, Rawcraft, and Loyalty & Faith.
It is reported to have assets of £7.5 million although its turnover last year was £13 million.
Robson Kay has been appointed by the administrator to oversee the sale of its assets and director David Kay said it has received a number of inquiries from potential buyers. It’s unclear whether Elizabeth Emanuel will make another attempt to win back control of her name.
