The final lap in the Christmas shopping race is gaining pace and the good news for retailers is that there are still plenty of last-minute panic buyers out there.

Nearly 19% of adults still plan to do some shopping on Christmas Eve, a nationwide UK study by car insurance broker The Green Insurer reveals.

Just 25% of consumers are expected to have completed all their Christmas shopping by 18 December with the likelihood that those who haven’t done so may have to rely in part on the high street due to potential delivery delays.

However, 93% of adults say they will do some Christmas shopping online with 38% also saying that half or more of their purchases will be made digitally this year.

But fear not physical retailers, that means around two-thirds will be relying on the high street, shopping centres and retail parks for their last-minute buys.

Paul Baxter, CEO of The Green Insurer, said: “Last minute Christmas shopping on the high street is still alive and well despite the rise of online shopping with millions expecting to spend some time on Christmas Even in the shops.

“The fact that so many people are waiting before completing their shopping demonstrates that the digital world hasn’t quite wrapped up Christmas yet.”
