John Lewis has extended its repair service across all of its department stores after a five-store trial saw strong customer take-up.

The service continues to be run in partnership with Johnsons, a Timpson Group company, and offers fashion repairs, alterations, dry cleaning and handbag restoration.
The trial was launched last July and John Lewis said it was “hugely successful”.
It comes as a study by eco group WRAP has revealed that over four in five clothing repairs “displace new purchases”.
As of this month, customers can drop off their items to be cleaned, repaired or altered at their local John Lewis shop and Johnsons will collect, repair and return the product to the shop. Alongside dry cleaning and handbag restoration, the service also includes services to homeware items such as duvets, bedding, curtains and rug cleaning.
The retailer also said that the most popular services from the trial were minor rip and seam repairs, “indicating customers looking to fix wear and tear of their beloved everyday items, as well trouser alterations for those looking for a better fit. One major success was the restoration of a vintage Chanel bag to near new condition within days”.
The retailer, which is one of the remaining major UK haberdashery sellers, also said it’s seeing a trend of “increasing interest in at-home repairs, with haberdashery accessories up 36% year on year and searches for John Lewis sewing machines up 50% year on year. Interestingly, searches for ‘pink sewing machines’ are up 255% as customers look to purchase machines as gifts and prolong the life of their much-loved products at home”.
