It’s always hard to fill stores vacated by retailers who sold from very large stores but Gatehsead’s Metrocetre has managed it.

Go Outdoors

Outdoor clothing and equipment retailer Go Outdoors is to open a store at the Metrocentre mall later this year. The unit, formerly occupied by Wilko, spans 20,242 sq ft within Blue Mall. It will become the retailer’s only shopping centre store in the region.

Presented as a ‘Go Outdoors Express’, the store will stock a variety of brands such as Rab, OEX, and Berghaus, as well as Peter Storm, HiGear, and North Ridge.

Expert advice and additional services will be part of the offer, including boot and rucksack fitting, with a focus on omnichannel “designed to meet the needs of Metrocentre’s customer base”.

Go Outdoors’ arrival is being seen as a “significant milestone” for Sovereign Centros-operated Metrocentre, having been able to quickly replace former tenant Wilko, which closed late last year.

Ben Cox, Director at Sovereign Centros from CBRE, said: “The signing of Go Outdoors is both a direct response to what our visitors want from the destination, and a great example of the importance of Metrocentre to the North East.

“Late last year we were hit with a significant challenge as Wilko closed, but a proactive approach and the destination’s appeal has put us in a position to introduce a brand that belongs here, in good time. Go Outdoors joins us as we build momentum with major retailers, like Frasers Group, Zara, and Primark, all committing to and investing in Metrocentre.”

That momentum has seen the mall consolidate its position “as the dominant destination in the North East and top five UK super regional mall” and follows the recent news of Primark taking a significant upsize at the destination.
